Stefanus arrived to the Nairobi at 2:00. Toto met him at the stage and we were off by 3:15. Cycling to Nyeri will take several days as we have to ride through the back roads of the central highlands. The central highlands is in the Kikuyu tribal area. It some of the most beautiful and productive farmland in Kenya, but it comes with a price. Steep hills and unpaved roads make the going slow and the body tired. We rode on the relatively new Thika highway, in the "bike lane". Don't be fooled, this is not like the bike lanes back in the U.S. We share here with pedestrians and motorcycles, but it is a big improvement than the first time I cycled Thika Highway 6 years ago! When we reached Juja it was almost 6 p.m. so we stopped at an orphanage that used to be run by Sister Luisa. She is well known for working with refugees from Sudan, but also helps Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees. We were welcomed with open arms and given snacks, dinner, showers, clean rooms to sleep in, and good discussion. A younger nun is here now and we spent dinner time getting to know each other. Tomorrow we will cycle to Juja Farm where another orphanage of 120 children is.
